Rivals surpassed the JAPANese company in unit shipments last year for the first time, according to iSuppli Corp. and NPD GROUP's DisplaySearch. "This is a significant blow to SHARP," iSuppli analyst Riddhi Patel said. "While its market share had been declining, SHARP had managed to maintain a considerable distance from its competitors. However, this is no longer the case." Both research companies found that SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS Co., based in South Korea, rose to the top spot, though they differ in SHARP's relative ranking. ISuppli said SAMSUNG's worldwide market share was 14.6 percent, followed by Royal PHILIPS ELECTRONICS NV of the Netherlands at 13.4 percent then SHARP at 13.3 percent, Tokyo-based SONY Corp. at 12.7 percent and Seoul-based LG ELECTRONICS Co. at 7.6 percent. DisplaySearch pegged SAMSUNG's market share at 13.4 percent, followed by PHILIPS at 13 percent, then SONY at 11.6 percent, SHARP at 11.4 percent, and LG at 7.1 percent. DisplaySearch also found that on a revenue basis, SONY stole the No. 1 spot from SHARP for the first time in 2006. Analysts say rivals began to erode SHARP's leadership in 2005 by more quickly building manufacturing plants to lower PRODUCTion costs and deliver a wider range of flat-panel TVs. Although SHARP was still the market leader in smaller-sized LCD TVs, rivals ramped their PRODUCTion to successfully feed consumers' demands for ever bigger TVs, said Edward Taylor, a vice president of TV market research at DisplaySearch. "I don't think the game is over for SHARP," he said. "Technologically speaking, they're out in front, but SAMSUNG and SONY are right there, and those two offer a broader PRODUCT range." SHARP media representatives said no one was immediately available for comment Wednesday. After losing significant ground in the market during the past holiday quarter, SHARP said in January it planned to boost PRODUCTion with expanded manufacturing lines and a new factory in MEXICO. "By building a robust supply setup, we hope to be even more aggressive in our GLOBAL business," SHARP President Katsuhiko Machida said at the time. 2006 Q3 LCD maker TOP5 http://www.displaysearch-japan.com/release/2006/12/r27.html 1 SAMSUNG(Korea) 13.2% 2 SHARP(JAPAN) 13.0% 3 SONY(JAPAN) 10.3% 4 LG ELECTRONICS (Korea) 7.4% 5 AOC (TAIWAN) 6.6% |
